Dead Bouquet – As Far as I Know

As Far as I KnowItalian rock trio Dead Bouquet’s debut album As Far as I Know, released in October 2014, is a spacey, haunting delve into both the future and the past in search of truth. Psychedelic, esoteric, and immense, these thirteen tracks fit perfectly with solitary nights of introspection or train-travel. Other parts conjure up images of wolves running through snowy forests, almost begging listeners to join them in their journey.

After several play-throughs, it’s hard to decide which is more beautiful, Carlo Mazzoli’s words and the way he sings them or how he absolutely shreds his 12-string. Both skills are showcased immediately on the opening track “The Dam.” The lyrics encourage a tearing down of the walls we build up around ourselves to protect us from the uncomfortable truth. It’s a powerful metaphor made even more intense by Daniele Toti’s thrumming bass lines. The track steadily builds before culmination in a powerful crescendo as Mazzoli wails “This place burns, but someday the river will get around it, as the dam will break.” These builds and crescendos characterize the album, and the style works well for these Romans.

Another notable track comes later in the album and is accompanied by a music video. “Nobody’s Sky” starts out sorrowful and slow as Mazzoli implores us to find solutions to our own problems, rather than looking to the heavens for help. “Faithful man, since you were born, you’ve prayed to nobody’s sky, looking for a god that could ease your pain, and clean the sin… the sin of living.” The guitar sounds mournful yet impassioned, as though Mazzoli and his instrument together are saddened by the state of the world they exist in.

Raw musicianship aside, the album sounds clean and cohesive start to finish, thanks in no small part to Paul Kimble’s production skills and the multi-instrumental abilities he lends to several tracks. All in all, Dead Bouquet’s first effort is absolutely worth listening to.
